Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Awards of Excellence

Individuals may nominate themselves or a colleague.

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) created the Awards of Excellence Program to honor its members whose exemplary contributions to the hospital medicine movement deserve acknowledgment and respect.

In honor of their achievements, recipients of each Award of Excellence receive an all-expense paid trip to SHM's Annual Meeting.*

Award recipients also receive:

  • Recognition on stage in front of friends, family, and colleagues at SHM's Annual Meeting
  • Recognition in The Hospitalist, SHM's monthly news magazine, and on www.hospitalmedicine.org
  • Recognition in press releases to local and state outlets

*All-expense paid trip includes complimentary meeting registration (excludes pre-course registration), hotel reimbursement (one night), airfare (up to $600.00), and transportation to and from the meeting venue.

**Recipients of the Excellence in Teamwork in Quality Improvement Award receive recognition at Annual Meeting, complimentary registration for all team members, and travel reimbursement for team members up to $3,000 to include hotel (one night), airfare, and transportation to and from the meeting.

Eligibility for Awards

Any current SHM member other than board members, officers, or SHM Awards Committee members is eligible to apply.

Nomination Requirements and Information (Nominees may be self-nominated)

Please note: All nominees must be SHM members.

Submission Requirements

All submissions for the Research, Excellence in Hospital Medicine for Non-Physicians, Excellence in Teaching, Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine, Award for Excellence in Humanitarian Services and Clinical Excellence Awards require the following:

  • Nominee's name, title, organization, phone number and email address (if this is not a self-nomination, include your relationship to the nominee)
  • A 1-2 page letter, either self-nomination or from another party addressing the specific criteria that are the basis for evaluation for the award of the nominee being considered

All submissions for the Award for Excellence in Teamwork in Quality Improvement require the following:

  • Completed Nomination Form. The form must address the specific criteria that are the basis for evaluation of the team being considered and should include:
    • A complete listing of the individual team members and their professional background as well as information about the team and/or process not included in the abstract, including:
      • The nature/process of the collaboration, roles of team players, and how the program improved system processes and patient outcomes (include process and outcomes measures)
      • The innovative aspect of the collaborative approach
      • The portability/transferability of the intervention to other institutions
  • Abstract
    • Limited to 2,500 words (abstracts greater than 2,500 words will not be accepted)
    • To include:
      • Background
      • Detailed methods addressing:
        • How the team worked together
        • How goals were attained
        • How local culture affected the process and outcomes
      • Results and Conclusions
        • Results should clearly define how data was collected and who collected it
        • Data should be presented in tabular or graphic format
  • At least one, but no more than two, letters of support from a senior hospital administrator (e.g., Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Director of Quality Improvement, or equivalent leader) from the institution where the project was implemented. (If more than two letters are submitted, the team lead nominee will be contacted to specify which should be considered. Each letter should indicate if confidentiality of content is waived.)
  • Up to two letters may also be submitted from other institutions that have adopted the intervention. (If more than two letters are submitted, the team lead nominee will be contacted to specify which should be considered. Each letter should indicate if confidentiality of content is waived.)
  • Disclosure statement indicating any direct, indirect, or pending project or faculty support from sources outside the home institution

For the Award for Excellence in Teamwork in Quality Improvement, please be sure to have one person collect and submit the Nomination Form, CV, and two letters of recommendation on behalf of the nominated team, and submit them to awards@hospitalmedicine.org or Society of Hospital Medicine, Attn: Awards, 1500 Spring Garden Street, Suite 501, Philadelphia, PA 19130. Failure to submit all the required information together will result in an incomplete nomination.
