The Journal's History
Launched in 2006, and under the current leadership of Mark V. Williams, MD, FHM, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, the Journal has achieved PubMed/MEDLINE indexing and debuted with an impact factor of 3.162 in 2009, along with a reputation of academic excellence among its peers. Distributed to SHM members and available online globally via Wiley-Blackwell's online platform, JHM is a must-read publication for hospitalists, internists, nurses, and physician assistants.
How to Apply:
To apply for the Editor-in-Chief position at the Journal of Hospital Medicine, please submit the following to Todd von Deak at tvondeak@hospitalmedicine.org.
- Cover letter of up to two pages detailing your vision for the Journal, why you aspire to be the next Editor-in-Chief, and your anticipated contributions to/for the Journal.
- CV including a comprehensive list of your published work (including books, journal articles, other publications). Please include full citation information for all articles.
- Letters of recommendation (up to three).
Candidate Qualifications:
Be a licensed and board certified physician. While a hospitalist candidate may have preference, other physicians who meet the other qualifications will receive fair consideration.
- Have an exemplary background in scientific communication.
- Have the ability to recognize and encourage publication of good science.
- Understand the job of Editor, particularly with respect to the peer review process.
- Be innovative, objective, and forward looking.
- Have good administration skills, especially with respect to the delegation of responsibilities.
- Have superior leadership skills, including fostering innovation, creativity, and productivity of editorial staff, associate editors, editorial boards, and reviewers.
- Collaborate closely with the Publisher, SHM Board and the Society senior staff to achieve goals set out for the Journal.
- Have interpersonal skills that reinforce the collegial atmosphere within the physician community.
- Understand the key relationship of the editor to the SHM Board
Overview and Expectations:
- Commit 8-10 hours/week to the Journal.
- Accept a 5 year contract term with an option for an additional 2 year term at SHM's sole discretion.
- Promote quality and style consistency in manuscripts published in the Journal.
- Act as Ambassador for the Journal domestically and internationally in all professional communication and at the scientific meetings s/he attends throughout the year.
- Work with the Society staff and Board to coordinate editorial policy with the financial and business aspects of journal publication.
Responsibilities:
- Work to further the aims and scope of the Journal.
- Structure the Editorial Board, incorporating current members as appropriate and rebuilding areas of strength where necessary.
- Set strategic goals for the Journal with regard to serving the informational and educational needs of hospital medicine clinicians and other key stakeholders in hospital medicine.
- Continue to make sure that the Journal is relevant to a broad audience
- Develop a unique personality for the Journal as one of the key communication vehicles for hospital medicine
- Provide leadership strategically and vision as the Journal moves to meet the evolving opportunities of the digital age of publishing
- Encourage submissions of scientific manuscripts, including solicitation of original research, review articles, editorials, and commentaries to the Journal.
- Work with the Publisher to identify topics and evaluate manuscripts for publication as special issues, supplements, and/or sponsored issues to the Journal.
- Send all manuscripts submitted for publication to the Journal or to special issues through a peer-review process that is both time-sensitive and equitable.
- Review final versions of peer-review manuscripts prior to submission for publication production.
- Hold regular Editorial Board meetings in conjunction with the Publisher to keep Editorial Board active, committed, and responsive to the needs of the Journal, and to report on the year's activities.
- On an annual basis, report to the SHM Board on the prior year's performance of the Journal.
- Working with the Publisher prepare an annual budget for the Editorial Office, if appropriate.
Available Resources:
- A Managing Editor that handles all manuscript management, editorial meetings, and provides general and overall assistance supplied by the Publisher and based in Hoboken, New Jersey.
- Other staff at the Publisher who provide research, business, marketing, circulation and other assistance as necessary.
- SHM staff for information, assistance, or projects as necessary.
- An annual editorial office budget for travel, meetings, etc. as approved by SHM.
- Computer, fax, and other equipment/resources as necessary.
